FIND YOUR NEUTRALS
Did you know that knowing your core neutral tones is just as important as knowing your core colours? 🎨
Here's my insider tip to find the shades that work best for you:
Everyone Can Wear Neutrals
You've probably heard that everyone can wear neutrals. It's true, but beyond navy, neutrals can lean towards cool ❄️ or warm 🌶️ tones. As a former bridal designer, I can tell you all about the many different shades of white (off-white, ecru, ivory… the list goes on).
Your choice of neutral shades can make all the difference between looking 👉 pale 👻 and 👉 vibrant 🌞.
The Core of Your Wardrobe
Neutrals form the core of your wardrobe and provide a beautiful framework for your coloured clothes. Next time you’re shopping for a white shirt, see if the off-white version flatters you more.
Neutrals are the foundation of your wardrobe. They create a solid base for the rest of your colours and make it easier to mix and match. Next time you’re shopping for a white shirt, pay attention to how different shades of white (like off-white) work with your skin tone. You might be surprised how much of a difference it can make!
Now, here’s how to make choosing neutrals even easier: Focus on your inherent colours.
Your inherent colours come from the natural tones in your hair, skin, and eyes. For example, you’ve probably noticed that a natural blonde often looks fantastic in lighter beiges, while someone with brown hair and a warm, tanned complexion can pull off leopard prints effortlessly. That's because their natural colouring complements those neutral shades, making them pop.
When you align your neutrals with these tones, everything in your wardrobe starts to harmonize. This is why certain colours just feel right — they connect with your inherent features and make you look more vibrant and alive.
I remember buying a dark grey Strenesse blazer a few years ago. I’ve always loved the brand, and when a sales assistant complimented me, I thought, “Okay, I’ll go for it.” This was way before I understood my own colour palette, though. Looking at the photos from that day now, I can see how the grey just washed me out and made my skin look dull. That’s when I realized how important it is to really know your own shades!
Insider Tip: Find Your Neutral Colours
Look at your inherent colours:
Your inherent colours are the natural tones you see in your hair, eyes, and skin. If you have blue or green eyes, you’ve probably noticed that wearing certain shades near your face can make your eyes pop, right? That’s because those colours connect with your natural features, making you look more vibrant and awake.
Here’s an example: A woman with green eyes wearing a green knit. See how her eye colour stands out?
I hope, I've given you plenty of inspiration to find Your Neutrals and new colours in your wardrobe that will last the test of time.
